Sup norm on bounded continuous functions
Builds on Completeness of the space of bounded continuous functionsUniform metric on bounded functionsSupremum
Example
Let be a topological space and let be the real vector space of bounded continuous maps . For , let , with when is empty. Then is a norm on , the sup norm, and is a Banach space with this norm.
Remarks
The supremum is finite because is bounded. The metric is the uniform metric. Its completeness is completeness of the space of bounded continuous functions. A sequence converges in the sup norm if and only if it converges uniformly. For a compact space , each continuous real function is bounded, so .
