Epsilon characterisation of Cauchy sequences
Builds on Metric spaceDiameter of a set
Statement
Let be a metric space and let be a sequence in . For each , let . Then the following two conditions are equivalent:
- For each real there is an integer such that for all .
- The diameters tend to as .
The sequence is a Cauchy sequence when it satisfies these conditions.
Remarks
Condition 1 is the usual definition of a Cauchy sequence. Each convergent sequence is a Cauchy sequence: if , then . In with the usual metric, the decimal approximations of form a Cauchy sequence that does not converge in . Each Cauchy sequence is bounded.
