Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let ff be a function of bounded mean oscillation on ℝn\R^n. For a cube QQ with sides parallel to the axes, let ∣Q∣\abs{Q} be its Lebesgue measure and fQ=1∣Q∣∫Qff_Q = \frac{1}{\abs{Q}} \int_Q f. For δ>0\delta > 0 let ωf(δ)=sup⁡∣Q∣≤δ1∣Q∣∫Q∣f(x)−fQ∣ dx.\omega_f(\delta) = \sup_{\abs{Q} \le \delta} \frac{1}{\abs{Q}} \int_Q \abs{f(x) - f_Q} \, dx. The function ff has vanishing mean oscillation if ωf(δ)→0\omega_f(\delta) \to 0 as δ→0\delta \to 0. The space of such functions is denoted VMO(ℝn)\mathrm{VMO}(\R^n).

Remarks

VMO is a closed subspace of BMO, and Sarason showed that it is the closure in BMO of the uniformly continuous functions in BMO. Some authors use a smaller space on ℝn\R^n, also called VMO: the closure in BMO of the continuous functions with compact support. The dual space of this smaller space is the real Hardy space H1H^1.

Example: every uniformly continuous ff in BMO is in VMO. If ∣f(x)−f(y)∣≤ε\abs{f(x) - f(y)} \le \varepsilon whenever ∣x−y∣≤η\abs{x - y} \le \eta, then on a cube QQ of diameter at most η\eta one has ∣f(x)−fQ∣≤ε\abs{f(x) - f_Q} \le \varepsilon for x∈Qx \in Q, so ωf(δ)≤ε\omega_f(\delta) \le \varepsilon for δ\delta small.

Example with a singularity: if n≥2n \ge 2 and ∇f∈Ln(ℝn)\nabla f \in L^n(\R^n), then the Poincaré inequality on cubes gives 1∣Q∣∫Q∣f−fQ∣≤C(∫Q∣∇f∣n)1/n\frac{1}{\abs{Q}} \int_Q \abs{f - f_Q} \le C \left( \int_Q \abs{\nabla f}^n \right)^{1/n}, which tends to 00 uniformly as ∣Q∣→0\abs{Q} \to 0. So such ff are in VMO, although they can be unbounded.

Non-example: f(x)=log⁡∣x∣f(x) = \log \abs{x} on ℝ\R is in BMO but not in VMO. For r>0r > 0, f(rx)=f(x)+log⁡rf(r x) = f(x) + \log r, so the mean oscillation of ff on [−r,r][-r, r] equals its mean oscillation on [−1,1][-1, 1], which is a fixed positive number. Hence ωf(δ)\omega_f(\delta) does not tend to 00.
