Open sets characterised by neighbourhoods
Builds on Topological spaceOpen setUnion of a family of sets
Statement
Let be a topological space and let . A set is a neighbourhood of when there is an open set with . Then a set is open if and only if is a neighbourhood of each of its points.
Remarks
Proof of the converse: for each , choose an open with . Then , which is open as a union of open sets. A neighbourhood need not be open. For example, is a neighbourhood of in . In a metric space, is a neighbourhood of if and only if contains a ball for some .
