Lebesgue measure
Description
Let . A box in is a product with , and its volume is . Lebesgue outer measure on Euclidean space is A set is Lebesgue measurable if for all . Lebesgue measure (or ) is restricted to the Lebesgue measurable sets.
Remarks
By Carathéodory's criterion the Lebesgue measurable sets form a -algebra and is a complete measure on it. Every Borel set is Lebesgue measurable, and for every box ; so on . Lebesgue measure is invariant under translations and rotations, and for . Up to a constant factor, it is the only translation-invariant measure on the Borel sets of that is finite on bounded sets. Every countable set has measure , and so does the Cantor set, which is uncountable. Lebesgue measurable sets are regular: for every measurable and there are a closed set and an open set with and . Not every subset of is Lebesgue measurable; a Vitali set is an example.
