Definition
Let , let be the Lebesgue measure on , and let be the closed ball of radius centred at . A covering of is a countable family of compact sets whose union is . It is required that each bounded set meets only finitely many . The lower density of is with the limit inferior; when the limit exists it is the density of . Let be a compact set with nonempty interior. The covering density of is , over all coverings of by congruent copies of .
Remarks
The ratio is the same as for the packing density; packings forbid overlaps, coverings forbid gaps. Since the sets cover , the ratio is at least , so , with equality when tiles space, as a cube does. Example: unit discs centred at the points of the triangular lattice spanned by and . Each disc contains the regular hexagon of circumradius around its centre, and these hexagons tile the plane, so the discs cover. The density is divided by the hexagon area , that is . Non-example: unit discs centred at do not form a covering, since the point is at distance from every centre. For a lattice covering , the density exists and equals .
