Definition

Let Ω∈ℝ\Omega \in \R and K≥0K \ge 0. Let FΩ,K ⁣:ℝ→ℝF_{\Omega, K} \colon \R \to \R be the map FΩ,K(x)=x+Ω−K2πsin⁡(2πx).F_{\Omega, K}(x) = x + \Omega - \frac{K}{2\pi} \sin(2\pi x). Since FΩ,K(x+1)=FΩ,K(x)+1F_{\Omega, K}(x + 1) = F_{\Omega, K}(x) + 1, it induces a map fΩ,Kf_{\Omega, K} of the circle ℝ/ℤ\R / \Z, given by fΩ,K(x+ℤ)=FΩ,K(x)+ℤf_{\Omega, K}(x + \Z) = F_{\Omega, K}(x) + \Z. The map fΩ,Kf_{\Omega, K} is the (standard) circle map with parameters Ω\Omega and KK, and FΩ,KF_{\Omega, K} is its lift.

Remarks

Example: for K=0K = 0 the circle map is the rotation x↦x+Ωx \mapsto x + \Omega; for irrational Ω\Omega it is an irrational rotation.

The derivative is FΩ,K′(x)=1−Kcos⁡(2πx)F'_{\Omega, K}(x) = 1 - K \cos(2\pi x). For 0≤K<10 \le K < 1 it is positive everywhere, so fΩ,Kf_{\Omega, K} is a diffeomorphism of the circle. For K=1K = 1 the derivative vanishes at x=0x = 0, so fΩ,1f_{\Omega, 1} is a homeomorphism with a critical point, but not a diffeomorphism.

Non-example: for K>1K > 1 the derivative takes negative values, so FΩ,KF_{\Omega, K} is not monotone and fΩ,Kf_{\Omega, K} is not invertible. The map is still defined, but it is not a homeomorphism.

The parameter Ω\Omega is often taken in [0,1)[0, 1), since fΩ+1,K=fΩ,Kf_{\Omega + 1, K} = f_{\Omega, K}.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
