Perimeter of a set
Builds on Lebesgue measureDivergence
Definition
Let , let be an open set, and let be a Lebesgue measurable set. Its perimeter in is the supremum below. Here is the divergence. The set is the space of continuously differentiable vector fields with compact support in . The value lies in , and is the perimeter of .
Remarks
Example: let be a bounded open set with boundary and outer unit normal . By the divergence theorem, . Extending to a continuous field of norm at most and smoothing it shows that the supremum equals , the area of the boundary. So the unit disc in has perimeter .
The perimeter is not the size of the topological boundary. The set has topological boundary , of positive area. But has Lebesgue measure zero, so every integral above vanishes and .
Equivalently, is the total variation of the distributional gradient of the indicator function . It is finite exactly when has bounded variation in . Changing on a set of measure zero does not change .
