Commutativity of convolution
Builds on ConvolutionConvolution on the lineLebesgue measure
Statement
Let , and let be Lebesgue measurable. Let . Then if and only if . In that case , where is the convolution. In particular for all .
Remarks
The proof is the substitution . Lebesgue measure is invariant under the reflection and under translations, so and the same computation with absolute values gives the equivalence of the two convergence conditions.
Example: on , with and , both and give at the length of and of , which are equal: both are for .
The statement uses that the group is abelian. On a non-abelian locally compact group, convolution with is in general not commutative.
Going deeper
For a student
Commutativity, together with associativity and bilinearity, makes a commutative algebra under convolution. It is the reason why the convolution on the line can be written with either function shifted. Under the Fourier transform it becomes the commutativity of the pointwise product .
