Definition

Let ∣⋅∣\abs{\cdot} denote Lebesgue measure on ℝn\R^n. For a measurable set A⊆ℝnA \subseteq \R^n of finite measure, its symmetric rearrangement A∗A^* is the open ball centred at 00 with ∣A∗∣=∣A∣\abs{A^*} = \abs{A}, and A∗=∅A^* = \varnothing if ∣A∣=0\abs{A} = 0. Let f ⁣:ℝn→ℂf \colon \R^n \to \C be a measurable function that vanishes at infinity, that is, ∣{x:∣f(x)∣>t}∣<∞\abs{\set{x : \abs{f(x)} > t}} < \infty for every t>0t > 0. The symmetric decreasing rearrangement of ff is the function f∗ ⁣:ℝn→[0,∞]f^* \colon \R^n \to [0, \infty] given by f∗(x)=∫0∞𝟏{∣f∣>t}∗(x) dt,f^*(x) = \int_0^\infty \mathbf{1}_{\set{\abs{f} > t}^*}(x) \, dt, where 𝟏B\mathbf{1}_B is the indicator function of BB.

Remarks

The function f∗f^* is nonnegative, radial, non-increasing in ∣x∣\abs{x} and lower semicontinuous. For every t>0t > 0, {f∗>t}={∣f∣>t}∗\set{f^* > t} = \set{\abs{f} > t}^*, so f∗f^* and ∣f∣\abs{f} have the same distribution function, and ∥f∗∥p=∥f∥p\norm{f^*}_p = \norm{f}_p for 1≤p≤∞1 \le p \le \infty. The Pólya–Szegő inequality states that ∥∇f∗∥2≤∥∇f∥2\norm{\nabla f^*}_2 \le \norm{\nabla f}_2 for f∈H1(ℝn)f \in H^1(\R^n). The Riesz rearrangement inequality states that ∬f(x)g(x−y)h(y) dx dy≤∬f∗(x)g∗(x−y)h∗(y) dx dy\iint f(x) g(x - y) h(y) \, dx \, dy \le \iint f^*(x) g^*(x - y) h^*(y) \, dx \, dy for nonnegative f,g,hf, g, h.

Example: in ℝ\R, let f=𝟏[1,3]f = \mathbf{1}_{[1, 3]}. For 0<t<10 < t < 1 the set {f>t}\set{f > t} is [1,3][1, 3], of length 22, so its rearrangement is (−1,1)(-1, 1); for t≥1t \ge 1 it is empty. Hence f∗=𝟏(−1,1)f^* = \mathbf{1}_{(-1, 1)}.

Non-example: the constant function f=1f = 1 on ℝn\R^n does not vanish at infinity, since {f>1/2}\set{f > 1/2} has infinite measure, so f∗f^* is not defined.

The one-variable decreasing rearrangement f♯f^\sharp on [0,∞)[0, \infty) is related by f∗(x)=f♯(ωn∣x∣n)f^*(x) = f^\sharp(\omega_n \abs{x}^n), where ωn\omega_n is the volume of the unit ball, up to values on a null set.
