Harmonic analysis on Euclidean spaces Convergence of Fourier series Theorem
Dini test
Builds on Fourier seriesDirichlet kernelRiemann–Lebesgue lemmaPeriodic function
Statement
Let be a periodic function of period that is integrable on , let and let . Suppose that Then the partial sums of the Fourier series of converge to as .
Remarks
Since the Dirichlet kernel is even with mean , one has . Write ; the hypothesis says that is integrable on , because there. The Riemann–Lebesgue lemma then sends the integral to . Example: if is differentiable at , or only satisfies for some and small , then the hypothesis holds with , so the Fourier series converges to . Continuity of at alone does not suffice, since there are continuous functions whose Fourier series diverge at a point.

For a student
The test is local: it depends only on near , in line with the Riemann localization principle. At a jump with one-sided Hölder conditions, it applies with . It is independent of the Dirichlet–Jordan test: some functions of bounded variation fail the Dini condition, and some functions satisfying it at every point are not of bounded variation.
