Definition
Let and let be an open set. A Lebesgue measurable set is a Caccioppoli set, or a set of finite perimeter, in if its perimeter is finite. The set has locally finite perimeter in if for every open set whose closure is a compact subset of .
Remarks
Example: the unit ball is a Caccioppoli set in . Its boundary is smooth, so , the area of the unit sphere, which is finite.
Non-example: the half-space with has , since its boundary is a whole hyperplane. It still has locally finite perimeter, since is the area of the part of the hyperplane inside .
Equivalently, has finite perimeter in exactly when the indicator function is a function of bounded variation in . Then the distributional gradient is a vector-valued Radon measure, and .
