Statement

Let n≥1n \ge 1, let 0<α<n0 < \alpha < n, and let IαI_\alpha be the fractional integral of order α\alpha on ℝn\R^n. Let 1≤p<q<∞1 \le p < q < \infty with 1q=1p−αn.\frac{1}{q} = \frac{1}{p} - \frac{\alpha}{n}.

  1. If p>1p > 1, there is a constant C=C(n,α,p)C = C(n, \alpha, p) such that ∥Iαf∥Lq(ℝn)≤C∥f∥Lp(ℝn)\norm{I_\alpha f}_{L^q(\R^n)} \le C \norm{f}_{L^p(\R^n)} for all f∈Lp(ℝn)f \in L^p(\R^n).
  2. If p=1p = 1, so that q=n/(n−α)q = n/(n - \alpha), then IαI_\alpha is of weak type (1,q)(1, q): there is C=C(n,α)C = C(n, \alpha) with ∣{x:∣Iαf(x)∣>λ}∣≤(C∥f∥L1/λ)q\abs{\set{x : \abs{I_\alpha f(x)} > \lambda}} \le \left( C \norm{f}_{L^1} / \lambda \right)^q for all f∈L1(ℝn)f \in L^1(\R^n) and λ>0\lambda > 0.

Here Lp(ℝn)L^p(\R^n) is the Lp space for Lebesgue measure.

Remarks

A short proof is Hedberg's. Fix xx and R>0R > 0, and split the integral defining Iα∣f∣(x)I_\alpha \abs{f}(x) into ∣x−y∣<R\abs{x - y} < R and ∣x−y∣≥R\abs{x - y} \ge R. The near part is at most CRαMf(x)C R^\alpha Mf(x), where MM is the Hardy–Littlewood maximal function, by summing over dyadic shells. The far part is at most CR−n/q∥f∥pC R^{-n/q} \norm{f}_p, by Hölder's inequality. Choosing RR to balance the two terms gives ∣Iαf(x)∣≤C Mf(x)p/q∥f∥p1−p/q\abs{I_\alpha f(x)} \le C \, Mf(x)^{p/q} \norm{f}_p^{1 - p/q}, and the maximal inequality for MM gives both parts.

The relation between pp, qq and α\alpha is forced by scaling. If fδ(x)=f(δx)f_\delta(x) = f(\delta x), then Iαfδ(x)=δ−αIαf(δx)I_\alpha f_\delta(x) = \delta^{-\alpha} I_\alpha f(\delta x), and an inequality ∥Iαf∥q≤C∥f∥p\norm{I_\alpha f}_q \le C \norm{f}_p for all ff and all δ>0\delta > 0 needs 1q=1p−αn\frac{1}{q} = \frac{1}{p} - \frac{\alpha}{n}. At p=1p = 1 the strong bound fails: if f≥0f \ge 0 is integrable with ∫f>0\int f > 0, then Iαf(x)I_\alpha f(x) behaves like c∣x∣α−nc \abs{x}^{\alpha - n} at infinity, which is in weak LqL^{q} but not in LqL^{q} for q=n/(n−α)q = n/(n - \alpha).

For a student

The inequality implies the Sobolev inequality for 1<p<n1 < p < n. A smooth function uu with compact support satisfies ∣u(x)∣≤C I1(∣∇u∣)(x)\abs{u(x)} \le C \, I_1(\abs{\nabla u})(x), and the case α=1\alpha = 1 then gives ∥u∥np/(n−p)≤C∥∇u∥p\norm{u}_{np/(n - p)} \le C \norm{\nabla u}_p. There is also a bilinear form: ∣∬f(x)g(y)∣x−y∣−λ dx dy∣≤C∥f∥p∥g∥r\abs{\iint f(x) g(y) \abs{x - y}^{-\lambda} \, dx \, dy} \le C \norm{f}_p \norm{g}_r when 0<λ<n0 < \lambda < n, 1<p,r<∞1 < p, r < \infty and 1p+1r+λn=2\frac{1}{p} + \frac{1}{r} + \frac{\lambda}{n} = 2. Lieb found the sharp constant of this bilinear form in the case p=rp = r.
