John ellipsoid
Builds on Convex bodyMatrixLebesgue measure
Definition
Let and let be the closed unit ball of . An ellipsoid in is a set , where and is an invertible real matrix. Its volume is , where is the Lebesgue measure of . Let be a compact convex body with nonempty interior. The John ellipsoid of is the ellipsoid of maximal volume among all ellipsoids with .
Remarks
The Löwner–John theorem shows that this ellipsoid exists and is unique. The ellipsoid of minimal volume containing is the Löwner ellipsoid (or Löwner–John ellipsoid) of .
Example: . Its John ellipsoid is the unit disk . The problem is invariant under the symmetries of the square, so by uniqueness the maximal ellipse is invariant under them too. An ellipse invariant under rotation by about the origin is a disk centered at , and the largest such disk in is .
Non-example: in the rectangle the unit disk lies in but is not the John ellipsoid. The ellipse also lies in and has area .
The condition that has nonempty interior is needed: otherwise every ellipsoid in would be degenerate, and no ellipsoid in the above sense lies in .
