Packing density
Definition
Let and let be the Lebesgue measure on . Let be the closed ball of radius centred at . A packing in is a countable family of compact sets with pairwise disjoint interiors. The upper density of is with the limit superior; when the limit exists it is the density of . For a compact set with nonempty interior, the packing density of is , over all packings of congruent copies of .
Remarks
The value lies in . Example: the packing of discs of radius centred at the points of . Each disc lies in its unit square, the squares tile the plane, so the ratio tends to , the share of each square covered by its disc. Non-example: discs of radius centred at do not form a packing, since neighbouring discs overlap in a set of positive area. For them the same ratio tends to . For a lattice packing of a body , the density exists and equals . Restricting to lattice packings gives the lattice packing density .
