Finite intersection of open sets is open
Builds on Open sets of a metric spaceIntersection
Statement
Let be a metric space, let be an integer, and let be open subsets of . Then the intersection is open in .
Remarks
Proof: let be in the intersection. For each there is with . Then and lies in each . The statement is false for infinite families: in , the intersection of the open intervals for is , which is not open. In a general topological space, this property is one of the axioms.
