Iterated function system

Builds on Complete metric spaceContraction mappingCompact set

Definition

Let (X,d)(X, d) be a complete metric space. An iterated function system on XX is a finite family f1,…,fN ⁣:X→Xf_1, \ldots, f_N \colon X \to X, with N≥1N \ge 1, of contractions: there are constants ri<1r_i < 1 with d(fi(x),fi(y))≤ri d(x,y)d(f_i(x), f_i(y)) \le r_i \, d(x, y) for all x,y∈Xx, y \in X. Its attractor is a nonempty compact set A⊆XA \subseteq X with A=f1(A)∪⋯∪fN(A).A = f_1(A) \cup \cdots \cup f_N(A).

Remarks

Hutchinson's theorem says that the attractor exists and is unique. The proof applies the Banach fixed point theorem to the map K↦⋃ifi(K)K \mapsto \bigcup_i f_i(K) on the space of nonempty compact subsets of XX with the Hausdorff metric. This space is complete, and the map is a contraction on it with constant max⁡iri\max_i r_i. So for every nonempty compact K0K_0, the iterates Km+1=⋃ifi(Km)K_{m+1} = \bigcup_i f_i(K_m) converge to AA.

Example: on ℝ\R, the maps f1(x)=x/2f_1(x) = x/2 and f2(x)=x/2+1/2f_2(x) = x/2 + 1/2 are contractions with constant 12\frac{1}{2}, and f1([0,1])∪f2([0,1])=[0,12]∪[12,1]=[0,1]f_1([0, 1]) \cup f_2([0, 1]) = [0, \frac{1}{2}] \cup [\frac{1}{2}, 1] = [0, 1]. So the attractor is [0,1][0, 1]. With f1(x)=x/3f_1(x) = x/3 and f2(x)=x/3+2/3f_2(x) = x/3 + 2/3 the attractor is the Cantor set.

Non-example: the family g1(x)=x/3g_1(x) = x/3, g2(x)=x+1g_2(x) = x + 1 on ℝ\R is not an iterated function system, since g2g_2 is not a contraction. It has no nonempty compact set AA with A=g1(A)∪g2(A)A = g_1(A) \cup g_2(A): the maximum aa of such an AA would satisfy a+1∈Aa + 1 \in A, which is impossible.

Suppose that the maps are similarities with ratios rir_i and that the pieces fi(A)f_i(A) do not overlap too much (the open set condition). Then the Hausdorff dimension of AA is the number ss with ∑iris=1\sum_i r_i^s = 1.
