Cardinality
Builds on Equinumerous sets
Definition
Let be a set. The cardinality of , written , is an object assigned to such that, for all sets and , For a finite set , is the number of its elements, that is, the unique with . For an infinite set, is a cardinal number.
Remarks
Other notations are , and . With the axiom of choice, one can take to be the least ordinal equinumerous with . means that there is an injection from to . See order of cardinals.
