Definition

Let XX be an observation from a statistical model with parameter θ∈ℝp\theta \in \R^p. Let δ0(X)\delta_0(X) be an estimator of θ\theta and let ν∈ℝp\nu \in \R^p be a fixed target. Let w(X)w(X) be a statistic with values in [0,1][0, 1]. The estimator δ(X)=ν+w(X)(δ0(X)−ν)\delta(X) = \nu + w(X) \big( \delta_0(X) - \nu \big) is a shrinkage estimator of θ\theta, obtained by shrinking δ0\delta_0 toward ν\nu.

Remarks

The weight ww may be a constant or may depend on the data. The term is also used more broadly for any estimator that pulls a basic estimate toward a target, for example by a penalty in a regression. The plain James–Stein estimator has a weight that can be negative; its positive-part version fits the definition above.

Example: let XX be normal with mean θ\theta and known variance σ2\sigma^2, and give θ\theta the normal prior with mean 00 and variance τ2\tau^2. The posterior mean is τ2τ2+σ2X\frac{\tau^2}{\tau^2 + \sigma^2} X. This is a shrinkage estimator with δ0=X\delta_0 = X, ν=0\nu = 0 and constant weight w=τ2/(τ2+σ2)∈(0,1)w = \tau^2/(\tau^2 + \sigma^2) \in (0, 1).

Non-example: δ(X)=2X\delta(X) = 2X in the same model. It has the form above with ν=0\nu = 0 and w=2w = 2, which is not in [0,1][0, 1], so it pushes the estimate away from the target rather than toward it.
