Definition

Let MM be a compact Riemannian manifold with norm ∥⋅∥\norm{\cdot} on each tangent space. Let XX be a C1C^1 vector field on MM with no zeros, and let φt\varphi_t be its flow. The flow φt\varphi_t is an Anosov flow if the following hold.

  1. For each x∈Mx \in M there is a splitting TxM=Exs⊕Ex0⊕ExuT_x M = E^s_x \oplus E^0_x \oplus E^u_x, where Ex0E^0_x is the line spanned by X(x)X(x).
  2. The splitting is invariant: Dφt(Exs)=Eφt(x)sD\varphi_t(E^s_x) = E^s_{\varphi_t(x)} and Dφt(Exu)=Eφt(x)uD\varphi_t(E^u_x) = E^u_{\varphi_t(x)} for all t∈ℝt \in \R.
  3. There are constants C>0C > 0 and λ>0\lambda > 0 such that, for all x∈Mx \in M and t≥0t \ge 0, ∥Dφtv∥≤Ce−λt∥v∥\norm{D\varphi_t v} \le C e^{-\lambda t}\norm{v} for v∈Exsv \in E^s_x and ∥Dφ−tv∥≤Ce−λt∥v∥\norm{D\varphi_{-t} v} \le C e^{-\lambda t}\norm{v} for v∈Exuv \in E^u_x.

Remarks

Example: the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle of a compact surface of constant curvature −1-1 is an Anosov flow. In the model Γ\PSL2(ℝ)\Gamma \backslash \mathrm{PSL}_2(\R), the flow is right multiplication by at=diag⁡(et/2,e−t/2)a_t = \operatorname{diag}(e^{t/2}, e^{-t/2}), and EsE^s, EuE^u are tangent to the orbits of the two horocycle flows. Conjugating (1s01)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & s \\ 0 & 1\end{pmatrix} by ata_t multiplies ss by ete^{t} or by e−te^{-t}, which gives clause 3 with λ=1\lambda = 1. Another example is the suspension flow of an Anosov diffeomorphism with constant roof function. Non-example: the linear flow φt(x)=x+tv\varphi_t(x) = x + t v on the torus ℝn/ℤn\R^n/\Z^n has derivative the identity, so no direction is contracted and clause 3 fails.
