Example
Let be a complete Riemannian manifold with tangent bundle . Let be its unit tangent bundle, the set of tangent vectors of length . For let be the geodesic with the base point of and . The geodesic flow is for . It is defined for all because is complete, and because is the geodesic with initial vector . So it is a smooth dynamical system in continuous time on .
Check on the flat torus : geodesics are straight lines, so and . For a direction of irrational slope, the orbit of is dense in the torus . For a direction of rational slope, every orbit is periodic.
Remarks
The geodesic flow preserves the Liouville measure on , the product of the Riemannian volume and the uniform measure on each unit sphere. If is compact and its sectional curvature is negative everywhere, the geodesic flow is an Anosov flow, as Anosov proved, and it is ergodic for the Liouville measure. For a surface of constant curvature it can be written as a homogeneous flow, see geodesic flow on a locally symmetric space. Identify with the cotangent bundle by the metric. Then the geodesic flow is the Hamiltonian flow of the kinetic energy , restricted to an energy level.
