Example

Let G=PSL2(ℝ)G = \mathrm{PSL}_2(\R), acting on the upper half-plane ℍ={z∈ℂ:Im⁡z>0}\mathbb{H} = \set{z \in \C : \operatorname{Im} z > 0} by Möbius transformations z↦(az+b)/(cz+d)z \mapsto (az + b)/(cz + d). These maps are the orientation-preserving isometries of the hyperbolic metric ∣dz∣/Im⁡z\abs{dz}/\operatorname{Im} z. The action of GG on the unit tangent bundle T1ℍT^1\mathbb{H} is free and transitive. Let v0v_0 be the upward unit vector at ii; then g↦g⋅v0g \mapsto g \cdot v_0 identifies GG with T1ℍT^1\mathbb{H}. For t∈ℝt \in \R let ata_t be the class of (et/200e−t/2)\begin{pmatrix} e^{t/2} & 0 \\ 0 & e^{-t/2} \end{pmatrix}. Then at⋅i=etia_t \cdot i = e^t i, and the path t↦etit \mapsto e^t i is the unit-speed geodesic through v0v_0, since the hyperbolic distance from ii to etie^t i is tt for t≥0t \ge 0. As gg is an isometry, gat⋅v0g a_t \cdot v_0 is the unit vector reached after time tt along the geodesic starting at g⋅v0g \cdot v_0. So the geodesic flow on T1ℍT^1\mathbb{H} is the right multiplication g↦gatg \mapsto g a_t.

Now let Γ\Gamma be a lattice in GG, for example the modular group or a torsion-free cocompact lattice. Left multiplication by Γ\Gamma commutes with right multiplication by ata_t. So the flow descends to Γ\G\Gamma \backslash G, which is the unit tangent bundle of the locally symmetric surface Γ\ℍ\Gamma \backslash \mathbb{H} when Γ\Gamma is torsion-free. It is an action of the Lie group ℝ\R on Γ\G\Gamma \backslash G. The same recipe works for a quotient Γ\G/K\Gamma \backslash G / K of a Riemannian symmetric space G/KG/K. There geodesics are orbits of one-parameter subgroups, and the flow becomes right multiplication on a homogeneous space of GG.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
