Linear and multilinear algebra; matrix theory Definition
Matrix
Definition
Let be a ring, for example a field, and let be integers. An matrix over is a family of elements , indexed by the pairs with and . The element is the entry of in row and column . The notation for is a rectangular array with rows and columns: The set of all matrices over is written or .
Remarks
Two matrices are equal when they have the same size and the same entries in each position. A matrix is a row vector, and an matrix is a column vector. Mathlib uses arbitrary finite index types in place of and .
