Symmetric matrix

Builds on TransposeSquare matrix

Definition

Let RR be a ring and let A=(aij)A = (a_{ij}) be an n×nn \times n square matrix over RR. The matrix AA is symmetric when AT=AA^T = A, where ATA^T is the transpose of AA. Equivalently, aij=ajia_{ij} = a_{ji} for all ii and jj.

Remarks

The matrix (1772)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 7 \\ 7 & 2 \end{pmatrix} is symmetric. For each m×nm \times n matrix BB over a commutative ring, BTBB^T B and BBTB B^T are symmetric. A real symmetric matrix has real eigenvalues and an orthonormal basis of eigenvectors, by the spectral theorem. Symmetric matrices represent symmetric bilinear forms in a basis.

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 4 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Show the path as a graph
Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
