Signature of a quadratic form
Builds on Quadratic formSylvester's law of inertia
Definition
Let be a real vector space of finite dimension , and let be a quadratic form on . Choose a basis in which . Let , and be the numbers of indices with , and . The signature of is the triple .
Remarks
By Sylvester's law of inertia, the triple does not depend on the choice of the basis. For a symmetric matrix of , the numbers , and count the positive, negative and zero eigenvalues of , with multiplicity. Conventions vary: some authors write only , or the number . The Minkowski form on has , and .
