Definition

Let RR be a ring and let A=(aij)A = (a_{ij}) be an m×nm \times n matrix over RR. The transpose of AA is the n×mn \times m matrix ATA^T with entries (AT)ij=aji(A^T)_{ij} = a_{ji} for 1≤i≤n1 \le i \le n and 1≤j≤m1 \le j \le m.

Remarks

The transpose of (123456)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 2 & 3 \\ 4 & 5 & 6 \end{pmatrix} is (142536)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 4 \\ 2 & 5 \\ 3 & 6 \end{pmatrix}. The rules (AT)T=A(A^T)^T = A, (A+B)T=AT+BT(A + B)^T = A^T + B^T and (cA)T=cAT(cA)^T = c A^T hold. Over a commutative ring, (AB)T=BTAT(AB)^T = B^T A^T, see transpose of a product. The matrix of the dual map is the transpose of the matrix of the map.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 2 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Show the path as a graph
Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
