Unitary matrix

Builds on Conjugate transposeIdentity matrix

Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let UU be a complex n×nn \times n matrix. The matrix UU is unitary when U∗U=In,U^* U = I_n, where U∗U^* is the conjugate transpose and InI_n is the identity matrix.

Remarks

Equivalently, UU is invertible with U−1=U∗U^{-1} = U^*, and then also UU∗=InU U^* = I_n. Equivalently, the columns of UU form an orthonormal basis of ℂn\C^n for the standard inner product. The eigenvalues of a unitary matrix have absolute value 11, and ∣det⁡U∣=1\abs{\det U} = 1. A real unitary matrix is an orthogonal matrix.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
