Statement
Let . Give the special unitary group the bi-invariant Riemannian metric induced by . Let be the space of paths in from the identity to .
- The minimal geodesics from to form a space homeomorphic to the complex Grassmannian of -dimensional subspaces of .
- Every geodesic from to that is not minimal has Morse index at least , as a critical point of the energy on .
- Hence the inclusion of into induces isomorphisms for .
- Consequently, for the stable unitary group , there are isomorphisms of homotopy groups for all .
Remarks
A geodesic from in has the form with skew-Hermitian. It ends at at time exactly when the eigenvalues of are with odd integers summing to . The geodesic is minimal exactly when of the equal and equal . Such an is determined by its -dimensional eigenspace for the eigenvalue , which gives the Grassmannian. The index of a geodesic is computed from the curvature of through the Morse index theorem for geodesics, and it grows with the . Morse theory on the path space then shows that is obtained from the space of minimal geodesics by attaching cells of dimension at least . This gives the third statement. The last statement follows from the third through the fibration . Its total space, the Stiefel manifold of orthonormal -frames in , is -connected. So for , and both sides stabilize as grows.
In the same way, a chain of eight such steps through symmetric spaces gives the real periodicity for the stable orthogonal group . For example, is connected and by the determinant, so and for all .

For a student
The argument is a model application of Morse theory on path spaces. One computes the space of minimal critical points of the energy and a lower bound for the indices of all other critical points. Then the path space and the minimal set have the same homotopy groups up to the bound. The same method, applied to and to symmetric spaces such as , yields the eight-fold periodicity of the orthogonal group. Bott periodicity is the foundation of topological K-theory, where it appears as .
