Compact symplectic group

Builds on Symplectic groupUnitary groupThe quaternionsSU(2)

Example

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let ℍ\mathbb{H} be the quaternions. For a quaternionic matrix A∈Mn(ℍ)A \in M_n(\mathbb{H}), let A∗A^* be its quaternionic conjugate transpose. The compact symplectic group is Sp(n)={A∈Mn(ℍ):A∗A=In},\mathrm{Sp}(n) = \set{A \in M_n(\mathbb{H}) : A^* A = I_n}, the group of ℍ\mathbb{H}-linear maps of ℍn\mathbb{H}^n that preserve the quaternionic inner product ⟨x,y⟩=∑kxˉkyk\ip{x}{y} = \sum_k \bar{x}_k y_k. It is also called the quaternionic unitary group.

For n=1n = 1, the condition reads qˉq=1\bar{q} q = 1, so Sp(1)\mathrm{Sp}(1) is the group of unit quaternions, which is isomorphic to SU(2).

Writing ℍn=ℂ2n\mathbb{H}^n = \C^{2n} turns Sp(n)\mathrm{Sp}(n) into a group of complex 2n×2n2n \times 2n matrices, and then Sp(n)=Sp(2n,ℂ)∩U(2n),\mathrm{Sp}(n) = \mathrm{Sp}(2n, \C) \cap U(2n), the intersection of the complex symplectic group with the unitary group. This is a closed and bounded subgroup of GL2n(ℂ)GL_{2n}(\C), so Sp(n)\mathrm{Sp}(n) is a compact Lie group.

Remarks

Sp(n)\mathrm{Sp}(n) is connected and simply connected, and its real dimension is n(2n+1)n(2n + 1). Its Lie algebra is simple of type CnC_n. It is a maximal compact subgroup of Sp(2n,ℂ)\mathrm{Sp}(2n, \C). The maximal compact subgroup of the real group Sp(2n,ℝ)\mathrm{Sp}(2n, \R) is different: it is isomorphic to U(n)U(n). The notation Sp(n)\mathrm{Sp}(n) for this group clashes with the notation Sp(2n)\mathrm{Sp}(2n) for the noncompact symplectic groups, and some authors write Sp(2n)\mathrm{Sp}(2n) or USp(2n)USp(2n) for it.
