Determinant
Builds on Alternating multilinear mapSquare matrixIdentity matrix
Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let . There is exactly one map with these properties:
- is a multilinear function of the rows of .
- when two rows of are equal.
- , for the identity matrix .
This map is the determinant.
Remarks
In other words, is the unique alternating multilinear map of the rows with value on . The Leibniz formula gives as a sum over permutations. For , . The same characterization holds with columns in place of rows, because .
