Linear and multilinear algebra; matrix theory Definition
Multilinear map
Builds on Linear map
Definition
Let be a field, let , and let and be vector spaces over . A map is multilinear when it is linear in each variable separately. That is, for each and each fixed choice of for , the map is a linear map .
Remarks
For , a multilinear map is a linear map, and for it is a bilinear map. The dot product on and the matrix product are bilinear. The determinant is multilinear in the columns of a matrix. A multilinear map is in general not linear on the product space: for a bilinear .
