Linear and multilinear algebra; matrix theory Matrices and matrix algebra Theorem
A matrix is invertible iff its determinant is a unit
Statement
Let be a commutative ring and let be an matrix over . Then is invertible if and only if its determinant is a unit of . In particular, over a field, is invertible if and only if .
Remarks
If is a unit, then the adjugate gives the inverse . Over , the matrix has determinant , but it has no inverse with integer entries. Over a field, this is one of many equivalent conditions for invertibility, with and .
