Matrix multiplication

Builds on Matrix

Definition

Let RR be a ring, let A=(aij)A = (a_{ij}) be an m×nm \times n matrix over RR, and let B=(bjk)B = (b_{jk}) be an n×pn \times p matrix over RR. The product ABAB is the m×pm \times p matrix with entries (AB)ik=∑j=1naijbjk(AB)_{ik} = \sum_{j=1}^{n} a_{ij} b_{jk} for 1≤i≤m1 \le i \le m and 1≤k≤p1 \le k \le p.

Remarks

The product ABAB is defined only when the number of columns of AA equals the number of rows of BB. Column kk of ABAB is the matrix–vector product of AA with column kk of BB. The product is associative and distributive, but it is not commutative. If AA and BB are the matrices of two linear maps, then ABAB is the matrix of their composition.

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 2 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
