Invertible matrix

Builds on Square matrixIdentity matrixMatrix multiplication

Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring and let AA be an n×nn \times n square matrix over RR. The matrix AA is invertible when there is an n×nn \times n matrix BB over RR such that AB=BA=In,AB = BA = I_n, where InI_n is the identity matrix. The matrix BB is then unique; it is the inverse of AA, written A−1A^{-1}.

Remarks

Over a field, other names are nonsingular and nondegenerate. A matrix over RR is invertible if and only if its determinant is a unit of RR. Over a field, a one-sided inverse is two-sided, and AA is invertible if and only if Ax=0Ax = 0 has only the solution x=0x = 0. The matrix (1111)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 1 & 1 \end{pmatrix} is not invertible over ℝ\R, because its determinant is 00.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
