Distributivity of matrix multiplication

Builds on Matrix multiplicationMatrix addition

Statement

Let RR be a ring. Let AA be an m×nm \times n matrix over RR, and let BB and CC be n×pn \times p matrices over RR. Then A(B+C)=AB+ACA(B + C) = AB + AC. Let DD and EE be m×nm \times n matrices over RR, and let GG be an n×pn \times p matrix over RR. Then (D+E)G=DG+EG(D + E)G = DG + EG.

Remarks

Both identities follow entry by entry from the distributive law in RR. We need both identities, because matrix multiplication is not commutative. Together with associativity, they make the square matrices a ring.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
