Leibniz formula for determinants
Builds on Determinant
Statement
Let be a commutative ring, let , and let be an matrix over . Let be the group of permutations of , and let be the sign of . Then the determinant of is
Remarks
The sum has terms. Each term takes exactly one entry from each row and from each column. For , the formula is the rule of Sarrus. The formula shows that the determinant is a polynomial in the entries, with integer coefficients.
