Baily–Borel compactification

Builds on Bounded symmetric domainArithmetic groupProjective varietyAlgebraic groupSiegel upper half-space

Statement

Let 𝐆\mathbf{G} be a connected semisimple algebraic group over ℚ\Q. Suppose that the symmetric space DD of 𝐆(ℝ)\mathbf{G}(\R) is Hermitian, so that DD is a bounded symmetric domain. Let Γ⊂𝐆(ℚ)\Gamma \subset \mathbf{G}(\Q) be an arithmetic subgroup. Then the quotient Γ\D\Gamma \backslash D has a compactification (Γ\D)∗(\Gamma \backslash D)^* with the following properties:

  1. (Γ\D)∗(\Gamma \backslash D)^* is a normal projective variety over ℂ\C;
  2. Γ\D\Gamma \backslash D is a Zariski-open dense subset of (Γ\D)∗(\Gamma \backslash D)^*, so Γ\D\Gamma \backslash D is a normal quasi-projective variety;
  3. the boundary (Γ\D)∗∖Γ\D(\Gamma \backslash D)^* \setminus \Gamma \backslash D is a finite union of quotients of lower-dimensional bounded symmetric domains by arithmetic groups.

Remarks

The theorem was proved by Walter Baily and Armand Borel in 1966. As a topological space the compactification is Satake's: one adds the rational boundary components of DD and divides by Γ\Gamma. The projective embedding is given by automorphic forms on DD of sufficiently high weight, through Poincaré–Eisenstein series; (Γ\D)∗(\Gamma\backslash D)^* is the Proj of the graded ring of automorphic forms for Γ\Gamma.

Example: for DD the upper half-plane and Γ=SL2(ℤ)\Gamma = SL_2(\Z), the boundary is one cusp, and (Γ\D)∗=Γ\D∪{∞}(\Gamma \backslash D)^* = \Gamma \backslash D \cup \set{\infty} is the projective line, with coordinate the jj-invariant. For DD the Siegel upper half-space ℍg\mathbb{H}_g and Γ=Sp(2g,ℤ)\Gamma = Sp(2g, \Z), the boundary strata are the quotients Sp(2h,ℤ)\ℍhSp(2h, \Z) \backslash \mathbb{H}_h with 0≤h<g0 \le h < g.

Going deeper

For a student

The algebraicity of Γ\D\Gamma \backslash D is what makes it possible to study these spaces, such as Shimura varieties, with algebraic geometry and to define them over number fields. The Baily–Borel compactification is minimal and usually very singular along the boundary. The toroidal compactifications of Ash, Mumford, Rapoport and Tai can be smooth, and each of them maps onto the Baily–Borel compactification. Borel's extension theorem says that holomorphic maps from a punctured polydisc into Γ\D\Gamma\backslash D, with Γ\Gamma torsion-free, extend across the punctures to (Γ\D)∗(\Gamma\backslash D)^*.
