Box spline
Definition
Let and let be a real matrix whose columns span . The box spline is the function such that for every continuous function on with compact support. Equivalently, is the density of the image of the uniform probability measure on under the linear map .
Remarks
If , then , a multiple of the indicator function of a parallelepiped, by the change of variables formula with the determinant. Adding a column gives the recursion , a directional convolution. Example: and with columns gives the cardinal B-spline of order with knots ; for this is the hat function on , zero elsewhere. Non-example: and with both columns equal to fails the spanning condition; the image measure lives on a line and has no density on . is nonnegative, supported on the zonotope , of integral , and piecewise polynomial of degree . It has continuous derivatives of order , where is the least number of columns whose removal leaves a set that does not span .
