Householder transformation

Definition

Let 𝕂\mathbb{K} be ℝ\R or β„‚\C, and let vβˆˆπ•‚nv \in \mathbb{K}^n be a vector with vβˆ—v=1v^* v = 1, where vβˆ—v^* is the conjugate transpose of vv. The Householder transformation (or Householder reflector) defined by vv is the nΓ—nn \times n matrix P=Iβˆ’2vvβˆ—.P = I - 2 v v^*.

Remarks

PP is Hermitian and unitary, and P2=IP^2 = I; for 𝕂=ℝ\mathbb{K} = \R it is a symmetric orthogonal matrix with determinant βˆ’1-1. It fixes every vector orthogonal to vv and sends vv to βˆ’v-v, so it is the reflection in the hyperplane vβŠ₯v^\perp. If x,yβˆˆβ„nx, y \in \R^n are distinct with βˆ₯xβˆ₯=βˆ₯yβˆ₯\norm{x} = \norm{y}, then v=(xβˆ’y)/βˆ₯xβˆ’yβˆ₯v = (x - y)/\norm{x - y} gives Px=yP x = y. Example: in ℝ2\R^2, take x=(3,4)x = (3, 4) and y=(5,0)y = (5, 0); then v=(βˆ’2,4)/20v = (-2, 4)/\sqrt{20}, and P=Iβˆ’220(4βˆ’8βˆ’816)=15(344βˆ’3),P = I - \frac{2}{20} \begin{pmatrix} 4 & -8 \\ -8 & 16 \end{pmatrix} = \frac{1}{5} \begin{pmatrix} 3 & 4 \\ 4 & -3 \end{pmatrix}, and indeed P(3,4)T=(5,0)TP (3, 4)^T = (5, 0)^T. Non-example: v=(2,0)v = (2, 0) is not a unit vector, and Iβˆ’2vvT=(βˆ’7001)I - 2 v v^T = \begin{pmatrix} -7 & 0 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix} is not orthogonal. For a nonzero uu that is not normalized, one writes P=Iβˆ’2uuβˆ—/(uβˆ—u)P = I - 2 u u^* / (u^* u). In computations, PP is never formed: PA=Aβˆ’2v(vβˆ—A)P A = A - 2 v (v^* A) costs O(nm)O(n m) operations for an nΓ—mn \times m matrix AA.
