Direct sum of subspaces

Builds on Sum of subspaces

Definition

Let FF be a field, let VV be a vector space over FF, and let U1,…,UkU_1, \dots, U_k be subspaces of VV. The space VV is the direct sum of U1,…,UkU_1, \dots, U_k, written V=U1⊕⋯⊕UkV = U_1 \oplus \cdots \oplus U_k, when each v∈Vv \in V can be written as v=u1+⋯+uk,ui∈Ui,v = u_1 + \cdots + u_k, \qquad u_i \in U_i, in exactly one way. Equivalently, V=U1+⋯+UkV = U_1 + \cdots + U_k, and u1+⋯+uk=0u_1 + \cdots + u_k = 0 with ui∈Uiu_i \in U_i implies u1=⋯=uk=0u_1 = \cdots = u_k = 0.

Remarks

For two subspaces, V=U⊕WV = U \oplus W if and only if V=U+WV = U + W and U∩W={0}U \cap W = \{0\}. For three or more subspaces, pairwise zero intersections are not enough: three different lines through 00 in ℝ2\R^2 are not a direct sum. If V=U1⊕⋯⊕UkV = U_1 \oplus \cdots \oplus U_k and VV is finite-dimensional, then dim⁡V=dim⁡U1+⋯+dim⁡Uk\dim V = \dim U_1 + \cdots + \dim U_k.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
