Lasso
Builds on Ordinary least squaresLeast squaresConvex function
Definition
Let be a real matrix, let , and let . For write and let be the Euclidean norm. A lasso estimate with parameter is a minimiser over of
Remarks
The objective is convex and tends to infinity as , so a minimiser exists. It need not be unique when the columns of are linearly dependent. There is no closed formula in general; the estimate is computed by coordinate descent or by the LARS algorithm. Authors scale the objective in different ways, for example with in front of the squared norm, which only rescales .
Example: assume and put , the ordinary least squares estimate. Then , and the problem splits into the problems of minimising . The solution is the soft thresholding . So every with gets .
Non-example: with the squared norm in place of , the same orthonormal case gives , which is never when ; that is ridge regression, not the lasso.
Equivalent form: for each and each lasso estimate , the vector minimises under the constraint .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
