Sum of subspaces

Builds on Linear subspace

Definition

Let FF be a field, let VV be a vector space over FF, and let UU and WW be linear subspaces of VV. The sum of UU and WW is U+W={u+w:u∈U, w∈W}.U + W = \{u + w : u \in U, \ w \in W\}. For subspaces U1,…,UkU_1, \dots, U_k, the sum is U1+⋯+Uk={u1+⋯+uk:ui∈Ui}U_1 + \cdots + U_k = \{u_1 + \cdots + u_k : u_i \in U_i\}.

Remarks

The sum U+WU + W is a subspace, and it is the smallest subspace of VV that contains U∪WU \cup W. The sum is the span of U∪WU \cup W. When U∩W={0}U \cap W = \{0\}, the sum is a direct sum. For finite-dimensional subspaces, Grassmann's formula gives dim⁡(U+W)=dim⁡U+dim⁡W−dim⁡(U∩W)\dim(U + W) = \dim U + \dim W - \dim(U \cap W).

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 3 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
