Second isomorphism theorem for vector spaces
Builds on Quotient spaceSum of subspacesIntersection of subspaces
Statement
Let be a field, let be a vector space over , and let and be subspaces of . Then the map is well defined, and it is a linear isomorphism. Here is the sum of the subspaces, and both sides are quotient spaces.
Remarks
In finite dimensions, it gives Grassmann's formula: . The proof applies the first isomorphism theorem to the map , , which is surjective with kernel .
