First isomorphism theorem for linear maps
Builds on Quotient spaceKernel of a linear mapImage of a linear map
Statement
Let be a field, let and be vector spaces over , and let be a linear map. Then the map is well defined, and it is a linear isomorphism. Here is the quotient space by the kernel, and is the image of .
Remarks
In finite dimensions, it gives the rank–nullity theorem: . The same theorem holds for groups, rings and modules. For a surjective map , it says .
