Quotient space

Builds on Linear subspace

Definition

Let FF be a field, let VV be a vector space over FF, and let WW be a linear subspace of VV. For v∈Vv \in V, the coset of vv is v+W={v+w:w∈W}v + W = \{v + w : w \in W\}. The quotient space V/WV / W is the set of all cosets v+Wv + W with v∈Vv \in V, with the operations (u+W)+(v+W)=(u+v)+W,a(v+W)=av+W(u + W) + (v + W) = (u + v) + W, \qquad a(v + W) = av + W for u,v∈Vu, v \in V and a∈Fa \in F.

Remarks

The operations are well defined, because WW is a subspace: the result does not depend on the choice of uu and vv in their cosets. Two cosets u+Wu + W and v+Wv + W are equal if and only if u−v∈Wu - v \in W. The zero vector of V/WV / W is the coset 0+W=W0 + W = W. In ℝ2\R^2 with WW the xx-axis, the cosets are the horizontal lines, and V/WV / W is isomorphic to ℝ\R.
