Ridge regression
Builds on Ordinary least squaresLeast squaresPositive definite matrix
Definition
Let be a real matrix, let , and let . The ridge regression estimator with parameter is the minimiser of over , where is the Euclidean norm. It equals
Remarks
The matrix is positive definite for , so the minimiser exists and is unique for every , whatever its rank. The formula comes from setting the gradient to zero.
Example: take , , and . Then and , so , while the ordinary least squares slope is .
Non-example: with the problem is plain least squares, and if is singular, for example when two columns of are equal, the minimiser is not unique.
In practice the regressors are usually standardised and the intercept is not penalised. For each there is such that also minimises under the constraint . In a normal linear model, is the posterior mode for a centred normal prior on .
