Polar decomposition
Builds on Unitary matrixSquare root of a positive semidefinite matrix
Statement
Let be an complex matrix. Then there are a unitary matrix and a positive semidefinite Hermitian matrix with The factor is unique: , the square root of . If is invertible, then is also unique.
Remarks
It follows from the singular value decomposition : take and . For , it is the polar form of a complex number. There is also a left polar decomposition with .
