Definition
Let be a real vector space. A positive cone in is a subset such that:
- for all ;
- for all and all real ;
- .
Remarks
A positive cone defines a partial order on by . This order satisfies and for , and . Conversely, for each partial order with these two properties, the set is a positive cone. Example: is a positive cone, and it gives the componentwise order. Example: the positive semidefinite matrices form a positive cone in the space of real symmetric matrices. Non-example: the half-plane satisfies clauses 1 and 2, but contains and , so it fails clause 3. Some authors drop clause 3 and call a wedge or a convex cone; then the relation is only a preorder.
