Definition

Let n≥2n \ge 2 and let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be a bounded open set whose boundary ∂Ω\partial\Omega is a C2C^2 hypersurface. Let f ⁣:∂Ω→ℝf \colon \partial\Omega \to \R be continuous, and consider the interior Dirichlet problem with data ff. For a continuous density φ\varphi on ∂Ω\partial\Omega, let DφD\varphi be its double layer potential, and let Kφ(x)=∫∂Ω∂Φ(x−y)∂ν(y)φ(y) dσ(y)K\varphi(x) = \int_{\partial\Omega} \frac{\partial \Phi(x - y)}{\partial \nu(y)} \varphi(y)\, d\sigma(y) for x∈∂Ωx \in \partial\Omega, as in the jump relations. Here Φ\Phi is the fundamental solution of the Laplacian with −ΔΦ=δ0-\Delta\Phi = \delta_0, σ\sigma is surface measure on ∂Ω\partial\Omega and ν\nu is the outward unit normal. The boundary integral method (double layer method) for this problem consists of the following steps.

  1. Seek the solution in the form u=Dφu = D\varphi on Ω\Omega, with φ\varphi unknown.
  2. Solve the boundary integral equation −12φ(x)+Kφ(x)=f(x),x∈∂Ω,-\tfrac12 \varphi(x) + K\varphi(x) = f(x), \qquad x \in \partial\Omega, for a continuous φ\varphi.
  3. Take u=Dφu = D\varphi on Ω\Omega and u=fu = f on ∂Ω\partial\Omega.

Remarks

By the jump relations, the interior boundary values of DφD\varphi are Kφ−12φK\varphi - \tfrac12\varphi, so step 2 is exactly the condition that uu is continuous on Ω‾\overline{\Omega} with u=fu = f on ∂Ω\partial\Omega. Since ∂Ω\partial\Omega is C2C^2, the kernel of KK is weakly singular and KK is a compact operator on C(∂Ω)C(\partial\Omega). So the equation is a Fredholm equation of the second kind. By the Fredholm alternative, it is solvable for every ff once the homogeneous equation has only the solution φ=0\varphi = 0. This holds when ℝn∖Ω‾\R^n \setminus \overline{\Omega} is connected.

Example: let Ω\Omega be the unit ball in ℝ3\R^3 and f≡1f \equiv 1. Gauss's integral gives K1=−12K1 = -\tfrac12 on the sphere, so φ≡−1\varphi \equiv -1 solves −12φ+Kφ=12+12=1-\tfrac12\varphi + K\varphi = \tfrac12 + \tfrac12 = 1. Then u=D(−1)=1u = D(-1) = 1 in the ball, the correct solution.

Non-example: let Ω\Omega be the shell {x∈ℝ3:1<∣x∣<2}\set{x \in \R^3 : 1 < \abs{x} < 2}, whose complement has the bounded component {∣x∣≤1}\set{\abs{x} \le 1}. Let φ=1\varphi = 1 on the inner sphere and φ=0\varphi = 0 on the outer sphere. The outward normal of Ω\Omega on the inner sphere points toward the origin, so Dφ=1D\varphi = 1 in the inner ball and Dφ=0D\varphi = 0 outside it, in particular on Ω\Omega. Thus φ≠0\varphi \ne 0 solves the homogeneous equation, and the equation of step 2 is not uniquely solvable.
