System of linear equations
Builds on Linear equation
Definition
Let be a field and let be integers. Consider a system of linear equations over , with equations in the unknowns . Such a system is a list of linear equations where all and are elements of . A solution of the system is a tuple that is a solution of each of the equations. The solution set of the system is the set of all its solutions.
Remarks
With the coefficient matrix , the vector and , the system is the single equation . Over a field, a system has no solution, exactly one solution, or more than one solution. When is infinite, "more than one" means infinitely many.
